When you send an important package with the most trusted transportation companies in the US and they promise 1 or 2 day delivery, you trust that they will do as promised. In fact, many businesses pay more for a carrier because they have this reputation of service excellence.
What if that package is a critical financial document or a surgical instrument needed for time-sensitive surgery, or even worse, what if it's an expensive cancer drug that needed for life saving treatment. But the carriers know this right? They have consistent systems and processes in place that make them reliable. And they would never intentionally choose to degrade the service they provide just to improve their own bottom line.
The fact is that there are formal programs among small parcel carriers that hold your shipments if it’s headed to an area with high cost to service. At UPS they even named it, calling the program Deferred Delivery. UPS is continuing to expand a program that slows delivery speeds in rural areas.
According to local news reports, “Starting in October of 2023, UPS has reduced the number of days it delivers in communities in southeast Wyoming, Marin County and Sierra County in California and Berkshire County in Massachusetts as part of a recent initiative by the carrier. Through the program, UPS consolidates deliveries in certain ZIP codes in an attempt to increase driver efficiency, adding an additional day in transit for impacted packages. Rural areas are typically more expensive for carriers to serve than dense urban areas, with fewer people and businesses to deliver packages to.”
But before all you Fed Ex loyalists get to excited, you should know they have been doing the exact same thing for years.
But all is not lost. All though there is some over lap, you will likely find that the carriers are not degrading service in the same areas. It might be time to consider if a blend of carriers could be right for your business. Not only could you improve your customers experience in these trouble areas, but its likely the competition among carriers will help you drive down shipping costs. Not sure where to start?
